The Best Fry Sauce

While classic ketchup is a must, this tangy, craveable french fry sauce is what your fries are missing. We combine a few of our favorite household condiments to create a spreadable, dippable sauce that pairs well with our favorite foods, beyond just fries. Maybe it’s the American in us, but we think sauces are meant for fries (and chicken fingers, chips, carrot sticks, and much more!) Plus, it’s a great way to get your kids to snack on veggies when all else fails. We love the richness from the mayo base, a hint of spice from the cayenne, and the balanced sweetness and tartness from the pickle juice. This sauce hit the spot, and if you don’t believe us, you should try it yourself.

What’s in Fry Sauce?

And is fry sauce just a Utah thing? Fry sauce is commonly consumed on the West Coast, mainly in Utah and parts of Idaho and Oregon. There are also a handful of other variations, like mayokétchup in Puerto Rico and a similar french fry dipping sauce in the UK. While fry sauce is not the same as Thousand Island or Burger Sauce, it is still similar with the use of mayo as the base.

In our fry sauce recipe, we use:

  • Mayonnaise

  • Ketchup

  • Garlic powder

  • Pickle juice

  • Smoked paprika

  • Cayenne pepper

  • Stone ground mustard

How To Serve Homemade Fry Sauce Dip

While it’s called fry dipping sauce and pairs perfectly with Homemade French Fries, it is also the perfect sauce dip recipe. It can be used as a sauce for Salmon Burgers, Chicken Burgers, and Black Bean Burgers or on sandwiches like Fried Chicken Sandwich, The Perfect Grilled Cheese, and BLT with Homemade Mayo (and swapping out the mayo!) It also makes an excellent dip for Fish and Chips, Healthy Baked Chicken Tenders, or Crispy Smashed Potatoes. The possibilities are endless when it comes to ways to use French fry sauce.

How To Make Fry Sauce

Follow these simple steps below to make the best sauce for fries:

  1. Whisk! Simply combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix.

  2. Enjoy! Pro Tip: although it can be used right away, if you allow it to sit in the fridge for a few hours, the flavors will start to marry together and deepen in complexity. Fry sauce can be saved and used for up to 5 days, but ours usually doesn’t last that long!

We love this homemade fry sauce dip because it’s not only used as a spreadable sauce but can be used as a dip for veggies and more. Some of our favorite sauces that you can use the same way:

  • Homemade Ranch - dip your fries, slather on burgers and sandwiches, or add to your charcuterie tray and vegetable board

  • Whipped Feta Dip – Spread this on a crusty baguette sandwich!

  • Burger Sauce - The best sauce for your burger, hands down.
